Walking-Friendly Neighborhoods

How walking-friendly is your neighborhood or one you may be thinking of moving to? Walkscore.com can tell you. Used for public health, urban planning, and real estate purposes, it gives ratings from 1 to 100 for any address in the U.S. and Canada, with higher scores indicating closer proximity—and thus easier accessibility by foot—to grocery stores, schools, libraries, restaurants, movie theaters, and other destinations in your city or town. Low scores indicate “car dependence.”

The website also ranks your neighborhood in relation to surrounding zip codes and provides distances to downtown and public transportation and more.

Walking is associated with many health benefits, including a reduced risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some cancers. And in preliminary research, moving to more walking-friendly neighborhoods was linked with a lower risk of high blood pressure.

The top city in the U.S. for walking? New York City—followed by San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, and Miami.
